Be true to you….

Be true to you….

What defines personal style? For me personal style is defined by the search of who we are represented by what we wear, this is why personal style is in constant evolution. Some are lucky to find out who they are, and some will be in eternal search. Today, thanks to the different media, magazines, and fashion brands it is easier to find a way to interpret and represent how we feel and who we are, but at the same time this is what makes it harder because the same media that inspires us contaminates us. For example in fashion blogs (one of the most used medias nowadays to find inspiration) it’s hard to tell whether what it is showed is a representation of the personal bloggers style or if it was paid to be there. Or in fashion editorials most garments may have been paid to be there and not been chosen by the stylist or a magazine to represent their point of view. It is not that personal style has to be extent of inspirational sources or references, but it relies on who where and how we interpret these references that makes it our own style.

For me there are 2 references that really represent personal and unique style.

The first is 90-year-old Iris Apfell. For those of you who don’t know her, Iris is an authentic style Icon, she is called “the rare bird of fashion” and her proximity to fashion is for me impressive, most of all because she says she dresses for herself and for nobody else, and I think this is her success. She says, “ If someone doesn’t like how I look it is not my problem, it is his. What is really important is not caring about what others think.” Fashion makes us fall in to a trap many times, wanting us to be approved by others (and I had fallen in to this several times) but what is really important is being confortable with ourselves.

Iris Apfel
Tavi Gevinson

The second person I admire is 74 years younger than Iris, and her approach to fashion through her own point of view is breathtaking (see video). Tavi Gevinson introduced herself to fashion with just 12, from a desk at her home writing for TheStyleRookie her personal blog and now is editor of her own magazine RookieMag. For example Tavi has been referenced by TV series from the 80’s, by singers and by POP icons and she evidences this herself, and now with just 16 years of life she interpret this so unique it is hard looking for someone or something to relate her to.

For Tavi having personal style is “creating your own fantasy world and find similar weirdos to share it with” and I totally support this idea of us creating our own fantastic world. For tavi having personal style is as important as having a good sense of humor.

Iris and Tavi “Good taste bad taste: The evolution of contemporary Chic”

Last week this 2 Icons met in the New York MOMA for a discussion on what they called “ Good taste or bad taste: The evolution of contemporary Chic” with Schiaparelli’s and Prada’s impossible conversation being held at the same place, the conversation between this 2 wasn’t at all impossible, This 2 fashion eminences are separated by 7 decades, but are united by the same ideal of representing your own style from the heart without caring what others think, which I believe is inspiring in a world where as I mentioned before is saturated with information, rules and stigmas that can make us real fashion victims, while fashion should be enjoyable and a tool to finding our selves. To sum up this whole idea, from my point of view fashion relies on a small quote “BE TRUE TO YOU”, I think if every time we dress we think of this the result will be flawless and we will really communicate who we are. I invite you to take as an example Tavi and Iris and create our own unique style. I doesn’t look so hard, does it?

Iris and Tavi “Good taste bad taste: The evolution of contemporary Chic”

No suena tan difícil o si?
